Uber was stripped of its licence to operate in London today after serious safety flaws with the company’s app allowed unauthorised drivers to pick up passengers.

The US minicab company, which has almost 50,000 drivers in London, was accused of a “pattern of failures” that put passengers’ safety at risk.

In a ruling today, Transport for London said that the company’s smartphone app, which is used by passengers to make bookings, contained security weaknesses that could be exploited by unlicensed and uninsured drivers.

It said that unauthorised drivers had been found to have uploaded their photos to other drivers’ accounts, allowing them to pick up passengers as though they were the booked driver. TfL found that this happened at least 14,000 times.
