In the annals of Nigeria’s journey toward equity and social justice, few leaders have left a mark as enduring and transformative as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari with his unwavering commitment to disability inclusion in Nigeria.
President Buhari’s tenure represented a pivotal chapter in the lives of millions of Nigerians with disabilities. For decades, the disabled community in Nigeria had stood at the margins of policy, overlooked in legislation and underserved in opportunity. It was under President Buhari’s leadership that this tide began to change in earnest.
In 2019, after years of advocacy and silence, President Buhari signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act; a watershed moment in Nigeria’s human rights history. By doing so, he did more than pass legislation; he validated the voices, dignity, and dreams of over 30 million Nigerians living with disabilities. For many, it was the first time a sitting president had truly acknowledged their humanity, their struggles, and their right to live free from systemic barriers.
But he didn’t stop there. Recognizing that laws require enforcement and institutional support, President Buhari established the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), a body tasked with implementing the provisions of the Act and ensuring that disability rights were not just protected on paper, but practiced in reality. This marked a powerful step toward building an inclusive Nigeria, where public spaces, education, employment, and healthcare are made accessible to all, regardless of physical or mental ability.
What set President Buhari apart in this journey was not just his executive action, but his humility and clarity of purpose. In a political landscape often driven by rhetoric, he chose results. He chose inclusion. He chose to respond to the silent pain and unspoken hopes of millions, giving them not only a seat at the table, but a rightful voice in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Today, ramps are replacing stairs, sign language interpreters are appearing on national broadcasts, and conversations about disability rights have moved from the sidelines to the center of national discourse; all ripples of the bold choices made during his presidency.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s legacy in disability inclusion remains deeply embedded in the heart of a more compassionate, more just Nigeria. For every child in a wheelchair who now dreams of attending school, for every deaf adult who watches the news in their language, for every person once hidden who now walks with pride, we say thank you.
Thank you, President Buhari, for being a leader who saw beyond ability, and chose humanity.
May your impact in the disability community continue to inspire a nation that leaves no one behind. Rest in peace Sai Baba.
