Police Need N8.6bn for Recruitment of 10,000 Personnel……..Thisday

Mike-OkiroThe Chairman of  Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Mike Okiro, has disclosed that about N8.6 billion would be required for the planned recruitment exercise of 10,000 police personnel into the force.
He said this at a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Committee on Police Affairs yesterday where he presented the breakdown of the required sum as N339,473,092.50 for overhead costs, N1,892,891.25 for advertising and N1,167,000.00 for technical resources.
N179 million will be for the renovation of training institutions, N3,489,750,000.00 for feeding, N2,835,441,000.00 for allowances and salaries, N1,013,550,000.00 for accoutrement and N118,290,000.00 for teaching aids, Okiro added.
The former Inspector General of Police further noted that N450 million will be required for arms and ammunition for shooting range,  N61,266,281.00 for teaching allowances and N117,958,719.00 for monitoring and evaluation.
The recruitment exercise, backed by a presidential directive, would engage 7,500 personnel as police constables, 500 as cadet inspectors, 500 as cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and 1,500 as various ranks under professional cadre.
Training is expected to start in June this year, Okiro said, upon conclusion of ongoing renovations across the police training schools.
The. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who declared open the public hearing said kidnapping, extra-judicial killings and high profile murders have assumed a huge proportion in the country.

“The recruitment exercise is therefore needed to help address the challenges of insecurity,” Dogara said.
“To this end the Nigerian people are demanding for transparent process in the recruitment of the men and officers and adherence to the principles of federal character which is enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended,” he said.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Halliru Jika, in his welcome address said security is the business of all citizens, and called for cooperation with the police.
