LSACA Debunks False Claims of 10,000 New HIV Infections and 700 HIV Cases Among Unilag First-Year Students

The attention of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has been drawn to viral social media posts circulated by a content creator, Favour Popp, and amplified by other online platforms, alleging that “Lagos records the highest HIV cases in Nigeria reports over 10,000 new infections and 700 infections among UNILAG first-year students.”

LSACA wishes to categorically state that these claims are false, misleading, inaccurate, and entirely without scientific or epidemiological basis.

At no time did the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency release any data, report, or statement indicating that over 10,000 new HIV infections or 700 HIV cases had been recorded among first-year students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The Agency has neither conducted nor published any study supporting such claims.

LSACA is deeply concerned about the dissemination of unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic, fueling stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV, and damaging the reputation of educational institutions and affected communities.

While Lagos State, as Nigeria’s most populous state, continues to implement comprehensive HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care programmes, HIV prevalence and incidence data are generated only through scientifically validated surveillance systems, research studies, and nationally approved health information mechanisms. Such statistics are never based on speculation, sensational headlines, or unverified social media reports.

The Agency therefore urges members of the public, media organisations, bloggers, content creators, and social media influencers to exercise professionalism, caution, and responsibility in the dissemination of health-related information. Accurate information on HIV and AIDS should only be obtained from credible and authorised sources, including LSACA, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), and the Federal and State Ministries of Health.

LSACA remains committed to strengthening HIV prevention efforts, expanding access to testing and treatment services, combating stigma and discrimination, and ensuring that residents of Lagos State receive accurate, timely, and evidence-based health information.

The public is advised to disregard the misleading reports and refrain from sharing content that promotes fear, misinformation, or discrimination.
