The Lagos State Police Command has declared a total ban on vehicular movement across the state in preparation for the local government elections set for Saturday, 12 July 2025.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the restriction would take effect from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day and will apply to all roads and waterways throughout Lagos.
According to Hundeyin, the directive is part of broader security measures to maintain public order and ensure a peaceful, transparent voting process across the state.
He noted that police escorts and armed security personnel will not be permitted to accompany their principals to polling stations or collation centres, a move aimed at preventing voter intimidation and any form of undue influence.
“Escorts and armed aides are strictly barred from all polling locations and collation venues,” the statement read. “This directive is designed to ensure that the electorate can exercise their rights without fear or coercion.”
Hundeyin also cautioned against the use of sirens and vehicles with obscured number plates near election grounds, warning that such actions would not be tolerated.
Only essential service providers such as ambulances, as well as accredited media representatives and election observers cleared by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), will be permitted to move freely during the restriction period.
The Lagos Police Command assured residents of robust security coverage throughout the election, adding that those who flout the movement restriction will face prosecution in accordance with the law.
