Some Nigerians have expressed different views on the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to seek the intervention of G-7 countries in tackling some problems facing the country.
While some described whatever assistance Nigeria may get from those countries as Greek Gift, that the country must handle it very cautiously, others see the step as the best thing to happen to the country if those countries agree to assist the country.
According to the President of Igbo Think Tank, Aka Ikenga, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, it is good for Nigerians to know that advanced countries would not want to assist any third world country like Nigeria unless they have something to gain at the end of the day.
“The West cannot help you unless they have something to gain from you,” he said.
Uwazurike stated that Nigeria may, out of the present predicament, want to get foreign assistance in order to stem the wave of insurgency that has devastated some parts of the country, that assistance would have some stringent conditions.
“They may make some promises of assisting the country in some difficult areas but such promises would be with some stringent conditions.”
However, Deputy National Organising Secretary, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Engr. Campbell Umehnzekwe, said what the country needs at this moment is nothing short of foreign support.
He cited the example of EFCC which for the past 12 years has not been able to successfully prosecute and convict some of the corrupt governors in the country.
“Those who are criticizing Buhari for the step taking are not sincere and want the country to continue in its present state,” he said.
Umehnzekwe believed that members of G-7 have the needed technology to help the country in monitoring our politicians and other corrupt Nigerians who steal the country’s wealth and take it abroad.
These countries are the best in intelligence gathering and monitoring which Nigeria needs at this present time to combat insurgency in the northern part of the country and also in curbing the menace of corruption in Nigeria.”
However, National Chairman of Northern socio-cultural organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), and former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, said the President has a good intention for the country which Nigerians must support him at this crucial time.
“I don’t want to say anything because the President must be supported by all of us for him to succeed instead of doing anything to distract him,” he said.
