ASUU: For Now, Strike Action Will Commence As Planned

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) (ASUU) has vowed to proceed on its warning strike in spite of the senate’s intervention.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU had on Monday issued a circular urging its members across the country to adhere to a one-week warning strike billed to start today.

Nigerian senators addressed the matter during Tuesday’s plenary and urged the federal government to implement all agreements reached with ASUU since 2009.

The senate extended an invitation to the leadership of ASUU while calling for a temporary suspension of the planned strike action.

“We must find a way of seeing to the implementation and we will look into the matter quickly. We will also get the relevant parties to quickly come to the table so that we can find a way of moving forward and report back to us,” Bukola Saraki, senate president, had said.

However, Biodun Ogunyemi, national president of ASUU, told The Nation that the strike cannot be suspended before the meeting with the senate.

“They have invited us for a meeting tomorrow (today) and we are going to meet with them. It is only after the meeting that we will call our own meeting and take a position.

“So, for now, the action will commence as planned. When we get to the Senate, we will address the issue. That is the position for now,” Ogunyemi said.
