President Jonathan Becomes UN Ambassador”

“G7 Invites Buhari to Summit”

One wonders why these two important news items in this transition period have not been paid any significant attention in the media. This is surprising, because to me, they underline the undercurrents that may shape the events after 29th of May.

Any discerning observer should wonder what qualified Jonathan for the position of a UN ambassador. Definitely, it can not be because he conceded defeat, since he was not the first person to take such a step, and those who did before him did not get any special treatment, neither could it be because of any stellar performance in his running of the affairs of this country. There have been other Heads of State who served their countries better. So why this offer of a UN job?

By the same token, the invitation extended to Buhari, an elected president who is yet to take office, is curious. Such invitations are usually reserved for sitting Heads of State of non-member countries. So, what is the purpose of this invitation at this time?

Looking at the two events in isolation, they make no sense, but taken together one can see the dots to be connected and thereby postulate the direction intended.

Here is my take; The level of malfeasance in the system is such that after the swearing-in ceremony, Jonathan may cease to be a free man right from the parade ground if Buhari is left to follow his instincts.

The International Community, with the amount of Intelligence at their disposal, probably know where the bodies are buried. So to forestall an explosive situation that could engulf the country should GEJ be treated like a common felon, he is spirited out of the country on his new ‘assignment’. Meanwhile the meeting with the G7 would provide all the needed information and modalities for recovering the loot scattered all over the globe to the incoming administration.

The trail of the missing money is getting hot, and the hounds can smell blood. The speed the PWC audit report was released is a pointer. It was not a case of Buhari saying he would probe NNPC that brought out the report.

Now why would the International Community go this length? By their reckoning, if Nigeria is embroiled in any civil strive which may occur if the situation as it is headed is not properly managed, it could spell disaster for the sub-region, Africa and the whole world. It would be costly clearing up the mess, hence this commonsense solution.
