TheGuardian (NG): Restructuring Is A Phantom Issue, Says Jibril

The National Chairman of the Pro-chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Prof. Munzali Jibril, has described those agitating for restructuring as selfish.

Jibril spoke at the Federal University Lokoja at the weekend, during its second convocation lecture.

He said they are making such clamour because they have lost out in the power struggle.

According to him: “Because a particular region wants to test-run its republic within the larger Nigeria nation, they are agitating for restructuring. Even within that region, it is the marginalised group that has lost relevance.

“They aligned with the previous administration where they lost out, hence they are looking for relevance.”

He supported the position of Bisi Akande, who said restructuring is not the language of Nigerians.

“Go and ask those who have been using it to define it for you. What we have been talking about, he said is devolution of power and I don’t think anybody will disagree,” he said.

He said many Nigerians have been confused because of the experience of the military, which had centralised structure.

He said the arrangement had the Federal Government getting about 48 per cent and the states and local councils getting theirs, but in a disproportionate manner.
