The Return of Environmental Sanitation By Gbenga Onabanjo

Will the Broom Cultivate Belonging?

Environmental sanitation has returned.

Wonderful.

The broom is back. The rake is back. The whistle may return. And for two hours, we may remember that drains are not dustbins.

But will the broom cultivate belonging?

I am currently in a city with no monthly sanitation drama, yet I feel emotionally attached to it. Roads are marked. Trees are tagged and cared for. Lawns are manicured. Parks, trails, schools, shops, pharmacies and community centres are within reach. Dustbins appear only on collection days. Even dog owners pick after their pets.

Nobody shouts sanitation.

The system simply works.

People care for places that first show care for them.

So as 2027 campaigns begin, let us ask politicians: what environment will you create to make citizens feel safe, proud and belonged?

Moral of the Satire

A broom may clean the street, but only belonging can protect the city.
