Police Say No Plan To Arrest Activist Asambe

The Police Command in Benue has dismissed rumours that it was planning to arrest Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, a Makurdi-based activist and Convener, Benue Alliance for Good Governance (BAGG).

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Sewuese Anene, dismissed the claims in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Makurdi.

Anene said that the allegations that the command had arrested two activists and was planning to arrest more was also false.

“To the best of my knowledge, there is no such plans,” she declared.

NAN recalls that Asambe recently claimed that the Police were after him and other dissenting voices in the state.

He also alleged that the Police had arrested and whisked some of his colleagues to Abuja, insisting that he was currently under close surveillance.

He further alleged that the police personnel on Saturday besieged his brother’s residence located at High Level area of Makurdi in a bid to take him.

The converner, who also denied recieving any invitation from the command, described the action of the Police as an attempt to gag Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the state.
