Of Hate Speech, No Work, No Pay By Solomon Ajadi

WHEN political appointments are lopsided and skewed towards one region, religion or ethnic group and people cry foul, they are already committing the new crime called hate speech.

When you are working for months or years and are not paid, to the extent that you can no longer get money borrow to go to work and you stopped going to work, you lose all you have worked for.

The government will invoke the no work , no pay law. Be that as it may, what will workers do when they work and are not paid? Does the government listen and take action without strikes?

Does the government realise that, in a civilised clime, it is an offence not to pay workers at the end of the month?

The idea of state governments not paying workers’ salaries is callous ,to say the least. It is like whipping a person and not allowing him or her to cry.

The only weapon and power that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has is to call out workers on strike when negotiation fails in an industrial dispute between the government and the labour union. This is what the government is about to deny them.

My advice to the NLC is for them to sponsor a bill at the National Assembly making non-payment of workers’ salaries and wages at any given period an impeachable offence.

This is the only way to avert the no work, no pay regime. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Actually, there should be no pay for work not done. But what happens in case of many months’ work without pay?
