Nigeria Has No Technical, Institutional Framework To Resettle IDPs – Ndume

Even as President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNEI), Chaired by Gen.T.Y Danjuma, Senator representing Borno South had state that Nigeria do not have the technical know-how to achieve a smooth settlement of Internally Displaced Persons in the North East.

Ndume who was speaking during the daily sit-out of the #BringBackOurGirls group stated that though the federal government is committed on the case of the IDPs, there were issues which needed to be taken care of.

He lamented that the rate of humanitarian crises in the North East was high that if nothing is being done, it will continue to become worse.

“There is a need to address the impending humanitarian crises in the North East. The world had a big shock when Bama was open. Many communities in the North East are affected. People are trapped and ar dying of hunger malnutrition and poverty,” he said.

The senator added that greatest challenge was how the IDPs can resettle in their various communities.

“The biggest challenge is to get people back to their land but we do not have the technical a-know. Unless we have an institutional frame work, it won’t be as easy. Government is committed but there is no technical and institutional framework to handle this.

“So much money was wasted during the past administration. This is the challenge we have. We are open to all forms of ideas for the way forward. All hands will be on deck. The first thing to take care of is hunger, malnutrition of th people,” he said.

He also expressed shock that even when the IDPs were suffering for lack of food, some Nigerians have resorted to stealing foods made for them

“Out of 113 trucks, 53 were only delivered. 29 were traced back to Minna and we made sure it was delivered. We were able to apprehend the culprit. They know they were going to be arrested. They know that they will just spend 24 hours and they are bailed. That is what the law says. They know that and that’s why they have the courage to do that. I went complaint. And we were able to get 12 trucks. I will keep lodging complaints until we get all the trucks,” he said.
