Lagos has finally advertised a vacancy:
CEO OF THE MEGACITY.
Applicants are already everywhere. Their photographs occupy poles, fences, walls and medians.
But Lagos says:
“I have seen your posters. Now show me your PLAN.”
First question: What is your 25-year vision for Lagos — beyond one political term?
Will you accept the principle of INFRASTRUCTURE BEFORE DEVELOPMENT? If one house becomes ten apartments, who upgrades the roads, drains, water, sewage, transport and public spaces?
Will Lagos gradually abolish inappropriate open drains?
Do pedestrians have rights, or must walking remain an obstacle course?
Why must every street become a market and every house a shop? What is your plan for organised neighbourhood commerce?
What is your waste-management architecture — collection, sorting, recycling, transfer stations and waste-to-value?
Where are the trees, parks, greenways and beautification plans?
Can local governments become genuinely responsible for neighbourhood streets, drains, sidewalks, parks, sanitation and public toilets?
And will planning and environmental laws apply equally to everybody?
Please don’t answer with adjectives.
Give Lagos BASELINES.
Give us TARGETS.
Give us DEADLINES.
