I recently got into Nigeria via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos and wish to use this medium to report the unprofessional behaviour of the customs officers at the airport. It is so sad that in Nigeria, the process of entry is easier for non-Nigerians than Nigerians! We talk about the Ease of Doing Business, display SERVICOM banners at the airport and say nice things but we are wicked to ourselves.
While the world has moved on via electronic means and faster service, it is sad that our immigration officials at the airport still expect “What did you bring for us?” in the terrible heat condition the airport is in. My flight landed on schedule at 8pm WAT but because of the man-made bottlenecks by the officials, I spent nearly two hours at the queue for my passport to be stamped. What is the KPI for these officials? What do they really understand by service delivery? Do they realise that their conduct is enough to put sand in the mouth of any visitor?
As for the airport management, the MMIA was a horrid experience with the exit tunnel not lit (very dark, we had to use phone torchlight) with so many touts and strange faces harassing you upon arrival and exit. This is a security risk and has to be stopped.
The MMIA can be run better than this terrible experience that makes one unhappy coming to Nigeria at the port of welcome.
God bless Nigeria. We need to change our ways.
