The matriarch of the Awolowo family, HID Awolowo, who passed away Saturday, started preparing for her death 20 years ago, her daughter said.

Tokunbo Dosunmu-Awolowo told PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday at their Ikenne family home that her mother was comfortable to go, and didn’t struggle with death at 99, just weeks before her centenary birthday.

Ms. Dosunmu-Awolowo, a medical doctor, said her mother gave instructions on how she should be buried, 20 years ago.

“She was comfortable to go. She was about 20 years ago talking about how she wanted to be buried. She designed a style of how she wanted to be buried. She welcomed and embraced death; she didn’t struggle with death and she was ready to go,” Ms. Dosumu said.

Notable sympathizers who called at the Awolowo family home on Tuesday included the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Alaba Lawson.

In her condolence message, Lawson said the deceased was her role model.

“My dear role model. A mother in a million. Yeye Odua, your legacy shall live with women forever. You came, you saw, you conquered. Erin wo! May your path be well illuminated. Sleep on Mama HID as you were fondly called,” she wrote.

The National Coordinator, Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, Gani Adams, in his condolence message said, “God has already blessed her and she was left with children that will take care and carry on the Awolowo legacy. I know that the children are highly resourceful to carry on with the family legacy”.

Other sympathizers included: Titi Ajanaku (former Special Adviser to President on Women Affairs), Sarafa Ishola (former Minister), Oluremi Tinubu and Ife Traditional Council among others.
