Fela, phenomenon and legacy, is an attempt to shed light from a personal experience and knowledge of the phenomenon that was Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. This impressive and rich experience started in 1974 after my high school graduation. I wanted to go study philosophy at the University, but as destiny would have it I ended-up studying philosophy in Fela’s Kalakuta Republic.
As a first step to achieving this end, I made attendance at the Friday Yabbis Night and Saturday Comprehensive Show at the Shrine more than a routine but more like a compulsory study time. These sessions opened my mind to the vastness and richness of the African cultural endowment and accorded Fela’s music in my heart a place beyond mere music to a profoundly authentic educational theme.
His unique and uncompromising use of music in disseminating wisdom and the enlightenment of the ordinary man in Nigeria and the Africans in the Diasporas in general, Fela’s philosophy, his career, his politics and since his demise his legacy, how through his engagements and actions, he raised the consciousness of the average Nigerian and indeed African, to understand political and social issues. It was almost like an apotheosis, a supreme or ideal example of the kind of wisdom that must propel a society.
The book defines his social and political influence on African society, how it affects the paradigm for social awareness and mobilization on the continent.
