Dear Sir/ Madam,
I was arrested at some minutes before 8 am today at some distance from under bridge at CMS bus stop for not using the pedestrian bridge. The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corp staff in mufti stationed themselves at the other end of the road to accost people that crossed the road.
On being arrested, a LSNSC staff in mufti (he flashed me his ID card) approached me to settle them with N10,000 or go to court to pay N25,000. I elected to go to court. I was then taken to a cabin under the bridge at CMS and forced to enter into their parked bus. I was the only one in the bus. The inside of this bus was dirty, dusty and about three-quarter filled with wooden objects they had seized. In spite of all my protestation to be allowed to wait outside until when they are ready to move to their said court, the head of the group threatened to manhandle me and more or less forcefully lifted me into the bus.
On my further protestation on the state of the bus I was forced into, the head asked me to pay N10,000. I told him I have no such amount with me. From the amount on me (N1,750); he estorted N1,500 before releasing me.
While I have no issue with enforcing use of the pedestrian bridge, the mode of operation of this squad under CMS bridge is most reprehensible, oppressive, dubious and set up with the objective of extortion.
The agency will do well to investigate my complaint and bring its official to order.
