The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, after he secured the highest number of votes and fulfilled the required electoral conditions.
The declaration was made by the State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), at the Osun State Governorship Election Collation Centre in Osogbo in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the results announced by INEC from the 30 local government areas, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 444,814 votes.
The difference between the two leading candidates was 66,253 votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won 19 of the 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11 LGAs. The results show that although the APC candidate secured several strong victories, Adeleke’s larger margins in key areas gave him the overall advantage.
In Ede South, Adeleke polled 26,188 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who scored 6,219 votes, while the ADC received 390 votes.
In Ife North, Adeleke scored 13,879 votes against Oyebamiji’s 9,613 votes, with ADC recording 333 votes.
In Boluwaduro, the governor narrowly defeated Oyebamiji, polling 7,118 votes to the APC candidate’s 7,050 votes. ADC scored 179 votes. Adeleke’s margin was just 68 votes.
In Ilesha West, Adeleke recorded 16,196 votes against Oyebamiji’s 12,756, while ADC secured 673 votes.
In Ifedayo, Adeleke polled 7,427 votes to Oyebamiji’s 6,836 votes, with ADC recording 115 votes.
Oyebamiji won Ilesha East, where he scored 16,208 votes against Adeleke’s 12,280 votes. ADC polled 504 votes. In Ife Central, Adeleke returned a strong result with 21,171 votes, defeating Oyebamiji, who scored 15,913 votes. ADC secured 747 votes.
Oyebamiji also won Boripe, polling 19,963 votes against Adeleke’s 12,448 votes, while ADC recorded 379 votes. In Irepodun, Oyebamiji edged Adeleke with 15,713 votes against 14,504 votes, while ADC scored 249 votes.
The APC candidate continued his winning run in Obokun, where he polled 16,120 votes to Adeleke’s 12,023 votes. ADC secured 205 votes.
In Orolu, the governor reclaimed the advantage for Accord, scoring 12,352 votes against Oyebamiji’s 10,622 votes, while ADC received 236 votes. Adeleke secured one of his biggest vote hauls in Osogbo, where he polled 36,480 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who scored 30,474 votes. ADC recorded 1,503 votes.
In Oriade, Adeleke scored 21,343 votes, defeating Oyebamiji’s 14,863 votes, while ADC polled 423 votes. In Odo Otin, Adeleke secured 18,003 votes against Oyebamiji’s 15,435 votes, with ADC recording 377 votes.
In Ife East, Adeleke polled 27,201 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who scored 18,600 votes, while ADC secured 935 votes.
In Ifelodun, the governor scored 21,107 votes against Oyebamiji’s 18,396 votes, with ADC polling 509 votes.
Oyebamiji won Atakumosa West, where he scored 10,037 votes against Adeleke’s 7,479 votes. ADC recorded 213 votes.
In Iwo, Adeleke recorded 27,085 votes, defeating Oyebamiji’s 19,660 votes, while ADC scored 588 votes.
Adeleke also recorded a major victory in Ede North, polling 35,427 votes against Oyebamiji’s 10,283 votes, with ADC scoring 307 votes. The result gave Adeleke a massive 25,144-vote margin in the LGA. Independent reports also identified Ede North as one of Adeleke’s strongest results.
In Ila, Adeleke polled 16,211 votes to defeat Oyebamiji, who scored 12,934 votes, while ADC secured 259 votes.
Oyebamiji recorded his most commanding LGA victory in Irewole, where he polled 29,972 votes against Adeleke’s 10,934 votes. ADC scored 275 votes. The APC candidate therefore won the LGA by 19,038 votes, his largest margin over Adeleke in the supplied results.
In Aiyedire, Adeleke secured 11,073 votes against Oyebamiji’s 9,910 votes, while ADC polled 148 votes.
Oyebamiji won Atakumosa East, scoring 9,936 votes against Adeleke’s 7,872 votes, while ADC received 333 votes.
In Egbedore, Adeleke polled 19,278 votes, defeating Oyebamiji, who scored 11,193 votes. ADC recorded 363 votes.
In Ayedaade, Adeleke narrowly defeated Oyebamiji with 16,681 votes against 15,719 votes, while ADC polled 331 votes.
Oyebamiji won Isokan, where he scored 14,063 votes against Adeleke’s 13,765 votes. ADC secured 384 votes, leaving the APC candidate with a narrow 298-vote margin.
In Ola Oluwa, Oyebamiji polled 10,782 votes to defeat Adeleke, who scored 10,063 votes, while ADC received 213 votes. Oyebamiji also won Ife South, recording 14,678 votes against Adeleke’s 13,507 votes, while ADC scored 290 votes.
In Ejigbo, Adeleke polled 18,458 votes against Oyebamiji’s 16,195 votes, while ADC candidate Najeem Salaam secured 5,053 votes in his home LGA. Adeleke’s margin was 2,263 votes. Contemporary reporting also confirms the Ejigbo figures.
The final LGA result was Olorunda, where Oyebamiji secured 24,671 votes against Adeleke’s 23,514 votes, while ADC recorded 666 votes.
The aggregate figures from the 30 LGAs put Adeleke firmly ahead with 511,067 votes, compared with 444,814 votes for Oyebamiji and 17,180 votes for ADC’s Salaam.
The figures give Adeleke a 66,253-vote margin over Oyebamiji.
The result was shaped by Adeleke’s commanding victories in several populous or strategically important LGAs, particularly Ede North, Ede South, Iwo, Ife East, Ife Central, Osogbo and Egbedore.
Oyebamiji, however, posted strong performances in Irewole, Boripe, Obokun, Ilesha East, Irepodun, Atakumosa West, Atakumosa East, Isokan, Ola Oluwa, Ife South and Olorunda.
His biggest gain came in Irewole, while Adeleke’s largest advantage came in Ede North.
With this, Adeleke has won the ticket to govern Osun for another four years.
