Time To Make The Votes Count By Comrade Timi Frank

jegaThe much awaited 2015 presidential election has come and gone. As things stand today, it is no longer a secret that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has outperformed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in some of the results of the elections officially released by returning officers so far. From the South West to the North West and from the North-East to the North-Central, APC is neck to neck with PDP and in most states head and shoulder above the ruling behemoth.

From the election results in the public domain one can wager that they represent a clear and unambiguous indication that the people have rejected the PDP. The people want change and they have found it in the APC. They have massively voted for the APC’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari. They have also elected their National Assembly candidates across the country. Nigerians want things to work. They have shown that they know the man who will make things happen. They are no longer ready to go with a man who will sleep for a whooping six years only to stagger awake and attempt to turn water into wine. The people have seen through the phony facade and they have refused to buy their last minute potpourri of deceit.

It is not surprising that the PDP having failed to stop Buhari through all manner of evil tactics, sack the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega; stop the use of the Card Reader Machines (CRM) or cause outright cancellation or indefinite suspension of the 2015 elections, has resorted to declaring itself winner before the electoral umpire makes official the results of the March 28 poll. Ever garrulous, ex-Minister of Aviation and Director of Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Femi Fani-Kayode, has arrogated to himself the powers of INEC to declare the PDP winner of the presidential election in a most dreamy and hallucinatory manner. With no evidence whatsoever and apparently revealing the evil plot of the PDP, Fani-Kayode attempted to preempt INEC by declaring the PDP and its presidential flagbearer of the PDP winner of the 2015 presidential poll.

“As we speak now, we are winning in 23 states and we have 64 percent while the APC is winning in14 states and has 36 percent,” Fani-Kayode said and added, “these results are subject to confirmation by the Independent National Electoral Commission.”

As a man whose life has been the fulcrum of illogicalities and bizarre assertions, he also said: “However, we are certain of what we are saying because we have information from our agents in every polling unit nationwide.”

He did not fail to hit the nail on the head of the actual information he was sent to convey. In 2011, they accused Buhari of having incited violence. But the PDP through Fani-Kayode has kept nobody in doubt that the PDP is ready to change results to support its position or invoke the ‘Amadioha’ should it fail in its quest. “No one must test our will,” he said, “by attempting to change these results and the APC should desist from pushing this nation to the brink of fire, chaos and destruction with their dirty lies and propaganda.”

It is apparent that Fani-Kayode is still hallucinating and no right thinking individual will take his vituperations with a pinch of salt. He went to trade in a bad market by jumping ship. Now he is faced with the stark realities that not all that glitters is gold. He will soon beg to be re-accommodated by the emerging ruling party. He is adept at swallowing his vomit. Nigerians and all lovers of democracy have Jega to thank for puncturing the false claims of the man that is being paid to lie. Speaking to newsmen at the International Conference Centre, the venue for the collation of the presidential election results, Jega warned against unofficial announcement of results by people who are “partisan,” adding that: “Only INEC can declare winners.”

The PDP believes they own this country by virtue of their opportunity to direct its affairs in the last 16 years. However, Nigerians have amply demonstrated and in most unmistakable terms that power belongs to the people. With the election results so far, one can only hope that things will get better. I think it is time for the PDP to wake up from slumber and face reality. Sovereignty belongs to the people and only the people can enthrone or dethrone any government in power through the auspices of the ballot box.

I am not surprised that the APC won the FCT presidential and National Assembly elections or is that not the true situation? Once upon a time, the City of billboards and banners saw change! It is also not shocking that change has finally berthed in Ondo State despite Olusegun Mimiko’s claim of invincibility. At least, if what I have heard is true, for once President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP will now know some of the parasites that have since chosen them as host. I hope the PDPPCO will still allow Mimiko to draw his allowance for the period even though he failed to deliver. There is a paper tiger around! PDP beware!

I also heard the dollar-soaked soil of other South-West states like Ogun and Oyo failed to yield votes for Jonathan to win. If that is correct, all the monarchs who ‘legally’ enriched themselves with the Jonathan dollars would do well to make refund if only to keep their image from being tarnished.

I don’t mind that the PDP repeated its abracadabra in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. Akwa Ibom has simply over-delivered for GEJ. That was expected. PDP stalwarts in Rivers claim to have also delivered for Jonathan, but the people said there was no election in most parts of the state. How did they get the votes they have declared? Observers have alluded to a sexed up election in The Treasure Base of the Nation. The Governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi did not vote because there were no result sheets. Supporters of the APC gubernatorial and National Assembly candidates – Dakuku Peterside, Magnus Abe etc, poured into the streets to tell the world of the heist that ravaged that city, but the PDP governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike laughed and dismissed the agitation with the wave of the hand. Like a dogged fighter, he is no doubt aware that it is never over until it is over. The struggle continues. All I know is that light must surely prevail over darkness.

Just like the Iroko was said to have fallen in Ondo, I also heard that the Obeche of Niger State, who wanted to transit from the Government House in Minna to the hallowed chambers of the Senate, has fallen.

The wind of change in Kogi State is particularly salutary. Otunba Dino Melaye had outsmarted Smart Adeyemi. Emotions overwhelm me. I cannot but say Kogi, oh Kogi! Freed at last! Lokoja, a city whose foundation was cemented by the Lugards! You have seen the light at last. Your change has come. Rise up and walk. From the ashes of PDP’s impunity and plunder shall yet arise a giant in the Confluence. The years that the locusts and caterpillars have eaten will definitely be restored. Rejoice! For your salvation has come. All they that mourn in the land shall be comforted. Rejoice over your independence. It is simply a day of joy!

Yes, Jonathan won Ekiti State but there is not much to cheer, let’s wait for all the votes to count. It is still too early in the day to dance over what may amount to Pyrrhic victory. Sadly, we hear vultures have encircled Nasarawa State even though there are no carcasses there. We pray they return to their abode atop the forest trees and pronto too. Progress must continue in that state.

Results are still trickling in from states as I write this piece. We have to wait for the final announcement of the winners by the INEC. Yes, there were incidents during the polls in some areas but they are not substantial to discredit the will of people as expressed on March 28. Therefore, let the people triumph. Let the votes of the people which have been counted count.
