The National Sports Stadium in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital was packed with tens of thousands of people to witness the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The atmosphere was filled with jubilation as the crowd danced to pop singer Jah Prayzer, who provided entertainment.
Leaders and dignitaries from various African countries came to witness the inauguration as well.
Chief Justice Luke Malaba led Mnangagwa in the oath of office saying he would “be faithful to Zimbabwe”, “protect and promote the rights and people of Zimbabwe” and discharge his duties to the best of his abilities.
Mnangagwa was accompanied by his wife, the incoming First Lady, Auxilia, and gave her a kiss after the green presidential sash was placed around his neck.
Mugabe was not in attendance at the inauguration, but “expressed his good wishes and support for the incoming president”.
Several reports from local media have said that Mugabe had been granted immunity from prosecution, Mnangagwa has offered the Mugabe family “maximum security and welfare”.
