Data shows that men and women are equally likely to contract the coronavirus but men are more likely to die from it.
According to the Global Health 50:50 project, which tracks data on Covid-19 and gender, all 14 European countries that have published figures showed men dying at a greater rate than women.
In Italy men account for 55 per cent of cases but 69 per cent of deaths — the most uneven split in Europe. In France men represent 47 per cent of cases but 58 per cent of deaths. In Germany it is 52 per cent of cases and 65 per cent of deaths.
