Tinubu Must Disown Obasa NOW…(Forwarded)

I have just read what I want to call the GRA declaration by former Speaker Mubasiru Obasa.

In the declaration, he made bold to say that he would remain the Speaker until the right thing was done.

A removal that was overwhelming in support by a majority of the members, coupled with staggering allegations that we have heard, should not elicit such a braggadocious performance as the one we have just witnessed in Ikeja.

It is in this regard that Mr President must came out and state his position very clearly on this matter so that his seeming silence would not be taken as support for such a disrespectful and almost idiotic response to the attempt by the members to clean up the mess in the house.

Serious allegations have been made against Mr Obasa, not by the media or CSO or Duke of Shomolu but by his colleagues who should know better.

One would think that his first action upon his return is to fight for his reputation by dragging the House to court to clear his name.

If he wins, then his reinstatement would be automatic as the grounds for his removal would no longer be tenable

Well, he has said from the reports that we should wait and see. Maybe he just might toe the line of commonsense and do the right thing as he has asked the house to do in his case.

But if I were to advise Mr Obasa, I would ask him to calm down and smell the coffee.

For that margin to vote him out – almost 90%, even if they were blackmailed, shows that he has lost the support of the house and it would take much more than a chorus line of drunken supporters from Agege singing =on your mandate.. to give him back his relevance.

Secondly, he has served ten years, and ordinarily, this should have led to boredom and a need for fresh air in the chambers and in its leadership.

So he should take this as a blessing in disguise, calm down, re-strategise and push for a soft landing rather than irritating people the more with his sabre rattling.

The sad thing about the Lagos State House of Assembly is that the composition of its members, especially in capacity, does not equate with the expected gumption needed to provide a check on the Executive or to partner with the leadership of the state, which is one of the most sophisticated on the continent.

How many of the members can engage very expertly on issues like Climate Change, the economy or the role of LG Autonomy in the current dispensation?

It is for this reason that people like Obasa can emerge and not only emerge but turn into a demagogues while pandering to a never-ending tenure whose only feature is patrimony and rent.

This Obasa matter must begin to make us look very critical at the States House of Assembly as a critical organ in sub-national development, and as such, its membership must reflect this.

We cannot always be throwing up people whose only qualifications are their ability to deliver their neighbourhood, usually throughugh nefarious means during elections .

This impacts, the quality of the Assembly and stifles it as it would not be able to play its role effectively.

See, for example, the debacle during the confirmation of Cabinet members.

The Governor was looking at legacy and qualifications to work with him in his last term to deliver on his vision, the Assembly was looking for those who delivered their areas in the last election to approve, and we all know what it takes to deliver a place like Agege.

Obasa’s case must trigger reforms in not only that tier of government but also at all tiers.

We must look at the calibre of people who put themselves up for election, look at the process and all

Lagos state with its unique model of selective democracy is in good stead in this regard

In their selection esp at the level of the highest organ within their structure , certain criteria and qualifications must be demanded, since once a candates is anointed, he most likely wins and this brings me back to the very seminal question at this point

Who anointed Obasa in the first place

Plus, don’t come and beat me o.

*Duke of Shomolu
