On Tuesday, the Nigerian Union of Journalists protested on the premises of ThisDay Newspapers in Apapa, Lagos, to demand the nine months of salaries owed to its members. The strikers also lamented ThisDay’s failure to remit personal income tax, pension cooperative deductions, and check-off dues from paid salaries.
Led by the Lagos State Chairman, Deji Elumoye, the Union laborers carried signs while blocking the entrance of the publication’s building, criticizing the refusal of the media organisation’s upper management and 12 alternative media houses to resolve the arrears owed to workers, specifically journalists.
Elumoye, who is a staff member of ThisDay, said he partook in and led the protests against his own organisation to pressure media publishers to prioritize the welfare of its workers. He specifically mentioned ThisDay’s publisher Mr. Nduka Obaigbena, who is also the president of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).
