The management of Ecobank Nigeria has denied claims that it disengaged a large number of its staff.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the bank said the people affected were contract staff adding that it decided not to renew the contract of its third party recruitment agencies.
According to its management, Ecobank said it was not under any obligation to renew its contract with the service providers.
“The bank decided not to renew the contract of its third party recruitment agencies which expired recently and as such returned this category of personnel back to these agencies who are their employers,” it said.
“Palliative measures were put in place by the Bank to cushion the effect on them. These include payment of contract cessation packages of over half a billion naira already paid through their employers as well as an opportunity given to those with requisite qualification to apply to the bank for permanent employment.
“In addition, the bank has offered them the opportunity to become Xpress point agents of Ecobank as a way of further providing them entrepreneurial and financial empowerment.”
The bank said it has plans to absorb 300 graduates into its system as permanent staff.
These people, it said, are currently undergoing training at its academy which was recently accredited by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

This is not true. If the affected staffs gets what they were meant to get from the said over half a billon naira…we are talking about over 500 million naira. No sacked staff will protest along side Labour Union and Nubeife. How on earth will the bank pay a staff who worked for over 6years 120k, 14years 400k and you call that cessation packages. Fidelity Bank paid their drivers 100k per the numbers of years in service. The former Ecobank MD CHARLES KIE who is a foreigner gave the sacked drivers the official cars they were driving at the moment they were sacked and some cessation package. The second hand values of those cars are over a million naira, how come an MD who is a Nigerian, knows what’s going on in the Labour Market treats us like slaves. Don’t forget the 300 staffs they talked about are not part of the sacked staffs. This ones are the so called management trainees fresh graduates without banking experience and they are being paid over 200k while those working tirelessly are collecting 48k,65k,etc…What will I do with 200k cessation package as a father with children? How much is house rent in Lagos? They no how much they collect for profit sharing, leave Allowance etc. We are the ones doing the job yet we did not commit fraud not compromise what will make the bank loose funds because part of our core values is INTERGRITY yet they use us as labourers on daily BASIS…where is their own INTERGRITY? We are not begging the management to renew our contract nor take us back but we should be paid well. How much did they spend on trips to abroad, Dubai with their families? Its times 10 what we were paid. Our Labour minister Ngige only talks on media that banks should stop sacking but did they after what Skye bank? What did he & CBN governor did? NOTHING. My question is this? Will this continue? Yes, if CBN, Labour Union, trade union etc and Federal government allowed it. If Nigerians allow another slavery in our own country. For your information, most of, if not virtually all the so called CONTRACT STAFFS have their Degrees, some Master’s. Why not upgrade them since they have been part of the system. What will Patrick Akinwuntan say? That they are old? Yes they are because they’ve been in the system since Oceanic Bank era or is he too a young man? No. I sent messages to Lagos Talks watsapp & classic Fm no reply. I ask after Uncle Jimi Disu & Demola Sadiq nobody said anything even after I left my name & phone number. May God fight for us since we are not elites or celebraties with connection in Abuja. Thank you.
