Newly-appointed national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, last week in Umuahia, boasted openly of his skills as a master political strategist who would lead his party back to the presidency in 2019. And All Progressives Congress retorted swiftly, mocking Sheriff’s 2019 dream as the laughable wish of a dreamer who is building castles in air.
Sheriff was in the Abia State capital to attend the thanksgiving service of fellow PDP man, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, whose election was recently upheld by the Supreme Court. Their party was forced into opposition after losing last year’s general election to APC.
But capturing power and boasts on how to capture power are hackneyed political rhetoric that Nigerians have since lost interest in. What the people want to see is capacity for effective use of power for the improvement of their quality of life. And efficient internal party organisation is certainly a crucial gauge of this capacity. Nigeria’s two major political parties should pay more attention to how they can rank well on this all-important attribute than romanticising about power.
