The Dapchi Kidnap – Making Sense of Media Information

Good day Uncle Jimi,

My name is Ahmed and i am ardent fan of your Newspaper analysis on 97.3FM. I (and my wife) have always tried to get across during your reviews but for some reason, my mails don’t get through and so i have given that up. This morning as usually i tuned in to listen to your rich analysis but was really bothered about your take on a lot of the issues. I know they are your own thought-trough opinions but i believe that for the greater good of the public, some assertions/information/ opinions should be as clear as possible. Having said this, these are details of my thoughts on these matters.

DAPCHI KIDNAPPING: a lot of people seem to believe that just like the Chibok kidnap, the Dapchi kidnap is a stage managed scenario.

First of all i say to such people; may our children not be involved in a stage managed kidnap ooo. The reason why i say this prayer is because i do not wish for the opposite for people who lack human feelings to even think up such a thing. Is it because these are poor village people of Northern extraction? Are we that inhumane as to tribalize and politicize such a sensitive issue. These where the same people who made the last administration pussy-foot and start late in the search for the Chibok girls – because it was fake

THE XTIAN GIRL STILL IN CAPTIVE. I don’t think it is right that you did not discourage the girl, and any other youngster in particular, from risking their lives all in the name of faith, belief or religion. I know people have their beliefs and faith which they hold dearly to(or pretend to anyway) but i believe that in order of importance, we are human beings first before any other thing like tribe, religion or race. So i say that to say this – why would anyone even think that the girl not agreeing to a bunch of deranged terrorist to wear a hijab or covert to a muslim was courageous?!….. she is just a kid for God sake and we shouldn’t encourage her to think of faith first before survival! Who does that! At that age!…. If the case were reversed and you look at it critically, this is the kind of belief this deranged terrorist themselves have. They will rather die for their beliefs whether right or wrong. I truely believe that as adults we should not propagate such blinded faith in any public space. this is the reason state and religion is separated. An example is the xtian pastor in Guyana in 1978 who asked all his followers to drink poison, they had faith in him and killed themselves. Now is that suppose to be honorable? of course it is – for those who have the same faith sha, but for others, its absolute madness! So i don’t think we should encourage blind faith in the matter of life and death especially when the life in question is that of a kid.

NUMBER OF RELEASED DAPCHI GIRLS: I believe that even when your analysis is based on what the papers say, you should also help us navigate the various fake news and inconsistencies in these news. For instance this morning you seemed confused as to how many girls where released and further agreed that the government was inconsistent in its information whereas, a simple check on Lai Muhammed’s interview yesterday on Channels TV was very clear. He explained how it was a developing case but as of that time in the morning they had xxx amount. Now Sir, when some says DEVELOPING in this context i believe we all know that it means we are watching for more changes, it might still change etc. So when the numbers keep changing, we have been forewarned but alas! the papers choose to ignore that but rather ride on their usually sensationalism to drive home the confusion in government point. A look at recent security challlenges in America and UK and you will see how their authorities and the media comment on breaking news in terms of casualties or survivers, they always tell you xxx figures but let you know that its a developing case and so updates are expected. Why can’t we sometimes just tow a line of dignity (Nigerians generally and media houses in particular) and report a clear and accordant news especially in sensitive cases like this. Here is a link to the Channels interview with the Minister:

Sir, i hope you find my views worthy of your time. I hope someday i will have the honour of being invited to your studio to speak on general issues and have some banter with you and your fellow merry friends.

Thank you Uncle J and keep up the good work.

Ahmed Aderibigbe

  1. I believe this kind of post is not worthy of your blog. What is the essense of surviving by doing things against your wish? Being coarsed to believe in another element/entity is another form of slavery. So, what’s the essence of gaining freedom from one form of slavery into another? I salute the bravery of that lad because whatever that’s not worth dying for is not worth living for.
