Residents of the Aguda community in Surulere, Lagos, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the bills issued to them by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) for power usage.
The agitation was premised on the failure of EKEDC to listen to the demand of the residents of the community who had, on several occasions, tendered their complaints regarding the issue.
The residents of Aguda, in one of their meetings, had set up a team to meet with the distribution company. However, according to them, the move had not produced the desired result.
In an email sent by the community to the EKEDC on July 20, 2018, the residents complained that they had been living in darkness for days, despite constantly paying tariffs.
“Please be informed that your people have disenfranchised us of power service for four days now. Kindly note this for reference and future purpose. Iyarere, Odogbolu, Ijewere, Adetola down, Savanna transformer, Aguda area, Lagos, etc.,” the email read.
Aside lamenting the two-week blackout, the team set up by the community also added that prepaid meters would be distributed across the community to tackle the issue of outrageous billing.
According to a resident who spoke to SaharaReporters on the situation with EKEDC, the electricity distribution company was attempting to disrupt the agitation by supplying power to some areas in the affected communities, after being directed from the headquarters to restore light to the entire community.
“Some of us started contacting the Customer Care Manager at Marina, who eventually ordered one Ayodele Ogunlade that is the Service Manager at Sanya to restore the light, but because he so much wanted to divide the community to ensure that it affected the agitation, he did not. The light was only partially restored,” he said.
