Response to Your Programme of Today: Chief Robert Clark and Tunji Lardner at The Discourse

Dear Mr. Jimi Disu,

Happy New Year!

I listened to your programme this afternoon and I thought I should write to you.

You dismissed Kingsley Moghalu’s candidacy because his running mate didn’t impress you during the national debate of the vice presidential candidates. But you are not so dismissive of the presidential candidates of the APC and PDP, in spite of their major flaws.

This races the following questions. Should a presidential candidate be principally appraised on his/her capability or the capability of his/her running mate? For the sake of argument, which means I am not suggesting Moghalu’s running mate is incompetent, which is more consequential: an incompetent president or an incompetent vice president. We have the answer: The Buhari’s administration has been defined by his incompetence and not by the competence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

As noted on your programme this afternoon, our country is being driven to the cliff by the visionless, greedy and divisive politicians. We sometimes point out some of the failures of these politicians, but we avoid the fundamental truth that they are not adequately equipped to deliver anything else but, overall, governance failure. And we also insist that it is people like this that can win the presidential election.

I believe the state of our country today calls for you and I to think outside the box. We have to push a paradigm shift in the country’s leadership. We have to do more than complain about our leadership failures and support a real solution on the ballot.

I was glad to hear you say you have a lot of respect for Moghalu. The logical next step in Nigeria’s politics that is not divided by ideology is to support him.

Should you oblige, I will be glad to further this discussion.

Kind regards

Jide Akintunde
