His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the man who has been the Queen’s steadfast support for more than seven decades, has died.
The duke, who returned to Windsor Castle three weeks ago after a month in hospital, died on Friday morning two months before his hundredth birthday.
The Prince of Wales travelled from Highgrove to Windsor to comfort his mother, who was mourning the loss of the man who has been at her side for 73 years. At their golden wedding celebrations in 1997 she described him as “my strength and stay”. It is understood that the Duke of York and Earl of Wessex were also in Windsor.
