ABUJA- The All Progressives Congress APC has formally reacted to reports alleging that the Senate is contemplating to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the purported move as ‘a huge joke taken too far’.
In a terse statement titled, “President Buhari’s Purported Impeachment Threat, A Huge Joke” and signed by the party’s scribe, Mai Mala Buni, the APC advised the senators “to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly”.
Senate President, Bokola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and two others are currently standing trial for alleged forgery of the Senate Rules. On another score, Saraki is facing the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT for offences bordering on anticipatory declaration of assets among others. The senate has constantly accused the executive of trying to stampede it into changing her leadership, warning that it would not bow to whims of some elements in the executive arm. However, the APC has described the allegations as puerile and baseless.
The statement read: “The attention of the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to media reports of a laughable impeachment plot by some Senators on President Muhammadu Buhari during Tuesday’s July 12, 2016 closed session of the Senate. “This is a huge joke taken too far.
The Party advises the Senators in question to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly. The Party reiterates that the Senators in question do not allow political shenanigans becloud overall national interest.
“The Party will not join issues on the Senate forgery suit and other court cases concerning some members of the 8th Senate because it will be sub judice. We advise the Senators in question to tow the same line and allow judicial processes run its normal and legitimate course. “Repeated allegations that the court cases are politically-motivated by the President and the APC are baseless.
The President Muhammadu Buhari administration strictly respects the principle of the Rule of Law and also adheres to the constitutional provisions of Separation of Powers between the three arms of government. “The APC urges Mr. President and the entire cabinet to remain focused in its effort deliver on election promises and to steer the nation to its deserved heights”.
During the closed-door session of the Senate on Tuesday, some senators led by Dino Melaye had purportedly advocated for the impeachment of the president, an allegation the Kogi-born senator had since dismissed as mere tissues of lies.
