Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, said that Lagos State was not submerged by the flood that recently ravaged many parts of the country despite the state being less than two metres above sea level was not a fluke, saying his administration took a proactive measure to avert the disaster.
The governor, who stated this at the flag off of his governorship campaign for reelection with the slogan, ‘A Greater Lagos Rising’, thanked the electorate for the support and solidarity for his administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He urged residents to reelect him, the Presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other party candidates for continuous efficient service delivery.
Sanwo-Olu said that his administration did not take the support and mandate given to him over three years ago when he was elected as the governor for granted, saying his administration worked so hard to overcome challenges caused by the global economic meltdown and other upheavals that shook the world.
He said that the campaign slogan, which is Greater Lagos Rising, was informed by the giant strides his administration recorded through the THEMES agenda, saying tremendous progress was made in the area of transportation and traffic management in the state.
Sanwo-Olu said: “You can see the completion of our rail projects, you have seen rail in Lagos for the first time in over 40, 50 years. There will be an intra-city rail system. We have completed it and we are going to be handling it to you. You have seen our commitment to all of our BRT corridors, first and last-mile buses, and new taxis. You have seen our commitment to ferry terminals, developing ferry terminals in seventeen locations across Lagos.
“We have resolved the Apapa gridlock, you have seen a new energized LASTMA that is working tirelessly. You have seen the construction and completion of the Lekki Deep seaport. You have seen the Regional Road that we are doing; you have seen the road going to Epe. You have seen the roads being constructed in Ikorodu, Alimosho, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and in every part of the state.’’
In his welcome address, the Chairman of APC, Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi, said that the party has been the ruling party in the state since the advent of democratic governance in the country, assuring the electorate that the party will not disappoint them.
The colourful carnival-like campaign rally also availed all candidates of the APC contesting election in the 2023 general elections in the three senatorial districts, 24 Federal House of representatives, and 40 state constituencies to showcase themselves to the electorate.
Present at the rally were leaders of the apex advisory body in the state, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), chieftains and members of the party from across the 20 local councils and the 37 LCDAs, religious leaders, Arewa community, and other representatives of various ethnic groups in the state, trade unions and Nollywood Yoruba movie stars to show their support for the party and its candidates.
The Director General of the State Campaign Council, Senator Ganiu Solomon, in his opening speech, appealed to the electorate to re-elect Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat and other candidates of the party.
