Osimhen: Equalling Rashidi Yekini’s Record Is Hard But Achievable By Remi Sulola

Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles forward, says equalling late Rashidi Yekini’s goal tally in the national team is “heavy for me but achievable.”

With 37 goals in 58 appearances for the national team, Yekini remains Nigeria’s highest scorer with his tally still unassailable after two decades.

Regarded as Nigeria’s greatest striker in history, he represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country’s first-ever goal at USA 1994.

But speaking at a press conference on Thursday, ahead of Nigeria’s match against Sierra Leone, Osimhen said he is determined to achieve and surpass Yekini’s feat provided he is injury-free.

“For me to fill in the legend, late Rashidi Yekini’s shoes is kind of heavy for me. But I am on the right path towards this direction,” the 22-year-old said.

“If I am injury free, I can achieve this but it’s not going to be easy. I believe with the trust the coach has in me and the fans supporting me, I believe that it’s achievable.

“But for now, I just want to continue helping the team and doing well which is the most important thing right now.

“Though, I am looking forward to achieving this but it’s not going to be easy. Because what he has done for the national team and the impact he made all over the world, it’s a huge step for me to take.

“But by the special grace of God, I am going to achieve this and surpass it too.”

Osimhen has so far netted four times in nine appearances for the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian team is currently camping in Edo ahead of their clash against the Leone Stars on Friday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
