We need to understand that what President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement simply exposed is that there was a lack of coordination between the then candidate and now president (Buhari), and his party – All Progressives Congress (APC). And this is one reason why today, we see the party saying one thing and the president saying the other. It is my view that this does not speak well of the integrity of governance in our society. People must be ready to be taken by their words at all times no matter how long it takes.
There is no justification for making promises that one cannot fulfill at the fullness of time. That nonetheless, I am still of the opinion that N5,000 in the face of the current reality cannot in anyway address the level of poverty amongst our youths and therefore demands that concrete actions that are more reasonable are taken to mitigate against unemployment and address the deepened level of poverty amongst the youth. There are no two ways out of poverty than the government, creating an enabling environment for jobs and wealth creation. No government anywhere in the world can singlehandedly employ the teeming number of unemployed youths, but it is the duty of the government to create an atmosphere that will encourage others, particularly the private sector to join in the duty of job creation in the society.
The reality is that beyond the stipulated amount earlier promised, Nigeria as a nation itself does not have any of those instrument required to embark on such poverty alleviating measures. Today, no government at any level can tell us the statistics of the unemployed youths in our society and one then begin to wonder who and who, would have been targeted to benefit from such promise in the first instance. Again, the reality facing us today as a nation economically does not signpost any possibility of such promise being practicable.
