Nigerian troops killed 18 Boko Haram fighters while repelling attacks by the Islamist group on two military locations in the northeast of the country, the army said.

The attacks occurred Tuesday morning at Pulka and Bitta on the fringes of Sambisa forest, army spokesman Sani Kukasheka Usman said in an e-mailed statement. An unspecified number of rebels were injured, one was captured and weapons and vehicles seized, Usman said. Three army troops sustained “minor injuries.”

Nigeria’s government says it’s making progress in its battle against Boko Haram, which has waged a violent seven-year campaign, mainly in the northeast of the country, to impose its version of Islamic law on Africa’s largest economy.
