So if you’ve kept up with all the iPhone 8 leaks that have slowly trickled out over the past several months then you’re probably pretty psyched about what Apple has brewing for…September? (Note that release date is in and of itself a rumor). There’s no way your expectations could possibly be crushed, right?
Well, maybe. According to Mashable, who themselves are basing it off speculation (but educated speculation, nonetheless), wireless charging, the Touch ID, the 3D scanner, and the OLED screen are all giving Apple engineers fits of varying degrees.
When it comes to the wireless charging, the ambitious feature perfect for long commutes and power outages is allegedly having software (but not hardware) issues that could make it an addition that’s added to the phone later. What that means is that the phone will have wireless charging capabilities when it launches, but it won’t actually be functional until the software is fixed and the phone is updated.
According to Fast Company, the Touch ID, which has been the largest source of mixed reviews since it was first rumored to be located under the screen, is reportedly causing a “sense of panic” as the target release date approaches. Such is the price of innovation.

Enter the 3D scanner, which is rumored to in fact replace the Touch ID, even though it’s also supposedly causing headaches at Apple. Like wireless charging, the feature’s problems are said to be software-related, which also means it can probably be patched with a future update.
Finally, when it comes to the OLED screen, rumored shortages of OLED panels suggest that just 3 to 4 million iPhones will be available at launch. While Mashable admits that these “reports” come from more questionable sources that the previous “problem rumors,” it also means that you might have to decide whether you want to wait in line for days in front of the Apple Store or not.
All this is to say that the phone could have a delayed release, but read into each of these what you will. Major companies have a way of pulling this stuff together despite rumors suggesting chaos.
