The Lagos State Government on Monday broke the gates of some streets in the state for violating the state’s directive, saying the exercise was continuous.

The action followed the expiration of the ultimatum given to all streets in the state to leave their gates open from 5am till 12 midnight every day.

The gates that were broken belonged to 28 streets in the Ajeromi Ifelodun area of Lagos.

The government had ordered all streets to leave their gates open between 12am and 5am to reduce gridlock in the state.

Some government officials, escorted by officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit stormed the Ajeromi Ifelodun area destroying gates of streets, which were locked against motorists.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Affairs, Alhaji Tajudeen Quadri, noted that the removal of the gates was done after series of awareness campaigns by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs on the need to adhere strictly to the state government’s directives.

He said, “There had been meetings with executive members of the community development committees, community development associations and the executive secretaries of local government areas and local council development areas on the directive.

“There is a need to remove all the gates mounted on the entrances of streets due to non-compliance of the residents to the opening hours of 5am to 12am.

“These gates constitute obstruction to traffic, especially in areas where such gates are on roads meant to serve as thoroughfares or alternative link routes. They also prevent firefighting vehicles and police patrol vehicles from gaining access to areas after they receive distress calls.”

He advised other residents that had not complied with the state government’s directive to do so before the government moved to their areas, adding that over 62 gates had been marked down for removal across the state.

  1. Thank you for this wonderful work. I plead with you in the name of God to come to Ago Palace and carry out this exercise, it is really a mess in this area. The inner roads are bad especially Dr. FASEUN street at Century of Ago Palace way. All the gates of 90% link streets are gated and shut down even during the day.
I believe our amiable Governor will look into this and do something.
