  1. The Lagos State traffic regulations are overly stringent on citizens. It is not within the mandate of LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) to verify drivers’ licenses.

  2. If Chief Gani Fawehinmi is to be alive today, he will change LASTMA on all these draconian laws.
I just hope coalition of Civil Rights Groups can rise to legally challenge the government on these.

  3. If you ask me .. the LASTMA has lost its focus. You are highway managers to start with which means to manage traffic.

This is a clear indication that it’s a means for these already corrupt officials to make money for themselves.

No drivers licence and you impound?.. why not make laws like educated and civil officers.

No license can attract a penalty of 20k and vehicle will be detained till the license of the offender is produced.

Driving one way should attract immediate confiscation of license and banned for 6months the driver will have no choice but to apply for a new one.which will take you to the first point made

Driving under influence or drugs and alcohol is confiscation of license, banned for 1year and must take driving lessons from FRSC and a fine of 50k

No road worthiness, the vehicle will be detained pending the certificate is issued and fine of 10k
    Just to mention a few.
The LASG wants to generate money and reduce the rate of irresponsible road users but in the real sense you are illegally enriching your officers who paint a bad image for your political party and govt.

Again these laws are too volatile and can cause risk to lives and assets in the process of enforcement I have seen official killed in the line of duty but at what cost. Just recently a man set himself ablaze trying to avoid enforcement of these laws. Why?

You make the laws but but you leave your officials to take the high risks

Kindly do a reappraisal of these laws and amend…

    Thank you

  4. The person or whoever wrote this “all they just need is someone who will be used as a scapegoat, please, don’t be one of such.“ has shown that the so called body or board is basically out for “hunting” spree and not to correct anomaly and educated the public. The “one way” signs that were removed from the beginning of some roads in Lagos Island like Victoria, have they been fixed? Why would a LASTMA official hide closer to the point to arrest instead of ensuring that the sign is fixed. Lagos State government has empowered touts, gave them uniform without rehabilitation and look away by giving them backing to arrears, threaten, embarrass and humiliate citizens. All these is just because the people that formed government lack other ways to generate revenue. Corruption has been incorporated as a major arm of the government and is seen by the officials as part of a department that must be embraced. What a shame.

  5. What is the punishment due to the State government’s neglect of the roads that are now filled with craters or the abandonment of street lights wherein citizens’ safety are no more guaranteed while driving on the streets in the night and the non-functioning traffic lights that have been abandoned? By the time the current government leaves office in 2027, Lagos would have reverted to pre-1999 era when Lagos was classified as the dirtiest and most unkempt city in the world. This government would have become the worst since the return to democracy in 1999. Unfortunately, all the good works the governors Fashola and Ambode did would have turned to waste. Drive through Oshodi and you will see what Lagos roads have been turned to!

  6. What is the rationale behind penalty for smoking or eating while driving while no mention is made about drinking alcohol or drunk driving? If the issue is driving with one hand (which the state appears to be more concerned about than an inebriated driver), then what about drivers who habitually drive with one hand? Or those with deformities or medical anomalies who have managed with one arm all their lives?

  7. What of driving under the influence of Alcohol.it is very common with driver sucking the sachet alcoholic drinks under the pretext that they are okay or they are tired. Get them tested on the roads and have a telephone hot number to report them.

  8. We need laws to hold the government accountable for its actions. For instance:

    – Breach of Agreement: If we pay for roadworthiness but the roads remain subpar, we should sue the government for $1 million.
    – Abuse of Power: If a LASTMA official advises ignoring traffic lights, they should face a ₦50,000 fine or 6 months in prison.
    – Entrapment: When LASTMA officials disguise themselves in mini buses to catch traffic offenders, both parties should receive the same fine. The list is endless.

The government must improve infrastructure, including roads and streetlights, to reduce traffic offenses and accidents. Except that they’re deliberately neglecting all this, just for the cause of extortion and revenue generation.

By implementing stricter laws and penalties, we can promote road safety and accountability.

    My 2cent…

  9. I don’t expect Lagos with this hard and difficult laws that will make all the las man to fall on the road looking for who to stop. They will leave there duty aside and start looking for unexpected reasons. Too much intimidation from the government can lead to bad news. Because all this law enforcement is to intimidate the poor man that is managing himself to feed his family. How many times will Lagos state give rules and regulations about driving laws. I see this law as oppression

  10. Just tell the citizen park ur cars and start hopping the buses the state have produced. How wish they understand the strength they are given to the ones on the road to become more uncultured and inhumane they are. Country is hard the world exercising recession that’s when u know you will make some uncalled for law just to extort people who have are not living well, cause ask una stupid gut who is this law supposed to go against? The CEO, government official, governor, dpo, Lastma DG, Frsc commander, LT. Col, perm sec?. That young boy u didn’t give work too who is trying to live outside the destruction the party policy is inflicting people on. That old man who can’t match up to standard of the economy who lives on the cabbie business, those ones who collect buses on hire to survive their family. And it’s not as if it’s all of u who was born with silver spoon then look how fast u have forgotten how the poor lives😭… Shey democracy ni eleyi abi crazy demo. Oluwa dide ija fun mekunu awon.

  11. It can be looked into but this shouldn’t be with the jurisdiction of LASTMA who are supposed to be traffic manager. THIS SHOULD BE ENFORCED SOME BY VIO AND THEN ROAD SAFETY.

Let us learn to put the round peg in the round hole for once.

PLEASE SPELT IT OUT CORRECTLY. So there is no abuse of office or power

  12. This is very good but where do the private motorists report erring traffic officers to? Also, what’s Lagos State doing about the illegal traffic officers especially from the local government. The ones at Fola Agoro/Adetayo Osho streets in Akoka are extorting motorists a lot. Kindly help to flush them out

  13. No. 11 is bogus! What will you say is disobedience to LASTMA? If a LASTMA is asking me to do something unlawful and I say no, isn’t that disobedience? These things should be well described to avoid the misuse of law or circumvention of the law.

  14. I can’t rationalize the penalty for someone driving without full light or spair tyre. If he has the money he would have put them in place. Are you saying that if the penalty is paid, he or she will be free to drive off the vehicle? I think offense like this shouldn’t be after asking offender to pay fine. The vehicle can be impounded and offender asked to do the correction and pay for the duration the vehicle spends in government premises.
The law is not explicitly expressed in many cases and it’s ambiguous giving room for manipulation and corruption.

    • Well said Mr Bayo, but the truth behind this law is simple. Govt is using it to generate revenue which is not supposed to be

  15. How abt driving on bad roads? That makes driving a living hell in Lagos. How abt the lack of street lights on major roads, how abt that?

  16. 3.Driving with fake number plates – N30,000, 3 years in prison.
Reply- The Lagos state Government should make effort to get rid of fake officers who masquerade themselves as vehicle license official who
Also, Lagos state government should make public cost of vehicle registration both new and renewal because their are price discrepancies due corruption in the system
Note – impounding a vehicle because the driver as no driver licenses . Simple tell the driver to simply do his or her license before the impounded car release to the owner!

    4. Driving with forged vehicle particulars – 6 months in prison.

Reply – Most of car owners are victim of corrupt Lagos state vehicle registration officials who take advantage of the car owners who are reaping Lagos state government of revenue. Go after them not the car owners!

  17. Many of these are ambiguous and some of the penalties ridiculous. For example, while attacking an official has a fine option driving with one hand or eating has no fine option. Which is worse?

  18. Despite all the above traffic regulations, which are laudable, why was there no traffic light working from Maryland to Ikorodu (Ijede) Road to be precise, all the road from Ikorodu roundabout to Ijede Road needs attention, which is contributing to damage of peoples vehicles, despite all the money collected on road tax of #40billion,collected by state government. I am not impressed by the way you are running the BRT buses, how I wish you and your colleagues are using them in going to work, which is what obtained in UK 🇬🇧.
