The Lagos State Government yesterday said that its Internally Generated Revenue has hit N24.5bn monthly, even as it said that arrangement has been concluded to set up a special courts to try tax evaders and defaulters.
The government vowed that it would apply the relevant laws to ensure that more Lagosians are dragged into the tax net, urging more residents to voluntarily pay their taxes.
Hence, in the new tax regime, maids, cooks, gardeners, gatemen and other domestic staff and those in the informal sector would begin to discharge their civic responsibilities. Briefing journalists at a joint Press Conference at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, the Chairman of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service, Mr Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, said efforts had been intensified to bring more members of the informal sector into the tax net.
He added that the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved the upgrading of the service to a full directorate in appreciation of the enormity of work to be done and the importance attached to it. “Towards this end, we have identified three categories of tax payers in the informal sector.
These are: market men/ women and artisans, micro, small and medium scale enterprises, including professionals, household domestic staff.”
