Lagos EndSARS Judicial Panel Suspends Sitting Indefinitely

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for Victims of Police Abuses and other Related Matters has suspended its sitting indefinitely.

Chairman of the Lagos Judicial Panel, Retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, announced the suspension on Saturday.

The suspension, according to a member of the panel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, was due to the alleged frustration of the efforts of members of the panel from reaching meaningful conclusions on the October 20 EndSARS protest staged by some Nigerian youths and celebrities at the Lekki Tollgate plaza.

“There are attempts to frustrate the EndSARS Judicial Panel from reaching meaningful conclusions on investigations into the Lekki Toll Gate incident of 20th October 2020.  The EndSARS panel is being frustrated. I will give details subsequently,” Adegboruwa posted on his Facebook page.

The Lagos Judicial Panel on Restitution for Victims of Police Abuses and other Related Matters was established by the Lagos state government on October 20, 2020, following a state-wide protest against the now disbanded SARS operatives and police brutality.

At the inception, the panel had six months mandate to sit over a hundred petitions from victims of police abuses and injustice with the sum of N200 million earmarked as compensation.

The panel duration was extended for three months from April to July 2021. It was later extended for another three months till October after its inability to clear its desk of loads of petitions.
