The Lagos State Government says the Vehicle Inspection Services and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will work with the Federal Road Safety Corps to rid the state of gridlock.
It added that the three government agencies would explore areas of partnership that included joint patrol teams. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Anofiu Elegushi, stated this during a visit to his office in Alausa, Ikeja, by the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC.
He said, “Managing traffic in Lagos requires all agencies with related responsibility to act in unison rather than at cross purpose.
“Synergy among traffic and security agencies will boost enforcement against traffic offences. A significant number of motorists and vehicles do not have the necessary papers to be on the road.”
Elegushi added that the government was receptive to ideas that would help to eradicate gridlock.
The special adviser urged drivers and commuters to exercise patience when driving in the state.
The sector commander noted that joint patrol teams would address both the quality of vehicles on the roads as well as ensure prompt adherence to the demands of the state’s traffic law and other extant laws.
He also called for the establishment of a mobile court to try traffic offenders arrested by the team.
Omeje added that efforts were on to dislodge touts and cartels that frustrated the processing of licences, saying citizens were entitled to such services at appropriate fees.
He further urged action in the area of abandoned vehicles, stating that they were a veritable source of security concern.
