As the conflict between Israel and Hamas enters its 40th day, the Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah Shawesh, has put the number of Palestinians killed at over 12,000.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja yesterday, Shawesh condemned the airstrikes on hospitals in Gaza, blaming Israel for the act. He said while humanitarian aid is necessary, unconditional ceasefire was a better option.
The diplomat said hundreds of bodies of Palestinian victims were decomposing in the courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital, on the streets, and under the rubble of bombed structures, expressing concern that there are no opportunities to bury them with the respect they deserve.
“With the deepest sorrow, the death toll among the Palestinian civilians has exceeded 12,000, the majority of them children and women. Over 2,000 more are still missing, there have been groaning still coming from under the rubble which means that some are still breathing and fighting for their lives.
“The casualty toll in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has also climbed up as Israeli occupying forces and settlers ratchet up their violence on Palestinian civilians,” he said.
Not looking back, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, yesterday warned that there is no safe place for the Hamas militants behind the October 7 attacks and “no place in Gaza” the army wouldn’t reach.
“They told us we wouldn’t reach the outskirts of Gaza City and we did, they told us we wouldn’t enter Al-Shifa (hospital) and we did,” he said hours after troops raided the territory’s biggest hospital. There is no place in Gaza that we won’t reach.”’
