Mrs. Ajibola Otunbusin, the 67-year-old woman who set a world record by giving birth at her age, yesterday said the rare feat was a fulfillment of long time prophecy. “I married at age 25,” she stated. “God spoke that He would give us a son, but we didn’t know it would take us so long. I was sick for about 30 years and in seeking for achild, I got pelvic inflammatory disease. So, I had four major health issues. “After I had gone to the hospital for treatment both in Nigeria and India, most nurses and some doctors told me that with four major health issues, I should forget about child bearing and live my life.” But at last, the sexagenarian was delivered of a baby boy on Saturday at Atoke Medical Centre, Ewang Extension, Abeokuta, Ogun State via the In-Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (IVF ET) procedure. A team of medical experts that performed the operation was headed by a consultant gynaecologist, Dr. Taofik Ogunfunmilayo.
The lucky mother, who retired as matron at the PHCN Clinic in Alasia, Oshodi, Lagos, told our correspondent that she went through challenging times before having a child. Beaming with smiles as she narrated her story, she, however, said her husband, Prof. Samuel Otunbusin, gave her encouragement all through. “God had gave us a promise and that kept us going with determination,” she enthused. Mrs. Otunbusin also used the opportunity to reassure women, who are still barren, not to lose hope in God as they search for the fruit of the womb. Also speaking, her husband of 39 , explained that Pastor W. F. Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Church once prayed for him and his wife about the child issue.
The latest father recently retired as a professor of Aquaculture Systems, Bio-Engineering, Physics Management and Economics at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) upon clocking 70 years. The retired don said though there was immense pressure from his family to marry another wife in order to bear children, he did not bulge but only remained faithful to the fulfillment of God’s prophecy. “God is faithful, He never dies.
When God promises, He fulfills it. If you worry, the worry doesn’t bring anything good for you and if you don’t, the better for you. And God is not in a hurry,” he stated. In a chat with New Telegraph, Dr. Ogunfunmilayo disclosed that his medical team had been managing the pregnancy since it was eight weeks old. The consultant gynaecologist expressed joy that the operation was successful. As the news of the “miraculous” birth continues to spread, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday, visited the sexagenarian at the hospital. The governor, who was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Chief Tolu Odebiyi, and the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, felicitated with the couple on their attainment.
