FRSC Convicts Man For Driving With Foreign License

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has convicted a motorist, Mr Azuka Okoye for driving on Nigerian road with South Korean driving license.

Okoye, in his plea said he just visited the country for the yuletide break and was billed to return to his base by the end of February.

He argued that the license was still valid and that he should be allowed to use it as it was a proof that he had good driving knowledge.

The Magistrate, Justice Eze Nwabachiri ruled that ordinary citizens were not allowed to use license of other countries unless there was a bilateral arrangement between the traffic agencies of both countries.

The court said those permitted to use foreign driving license were diplomats, envoy and tourists and that the accused was guity as charged.

“You are hereby sentenced to a fine of N7, 000 or two months imprisonment,” he said.

Speaking on the Mobile Court operation, Mr Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra said it was in line with safer road objective of the corps.

Ajayi said the operation was in conjunction with the Anambra government which had expressed immense concern over the recklessness of drivers on the state roads.

Ajayi warned motorists to be safety conscious at all times at the Mobile Court would be sitting regularly because of its effectiveness in checking driver misconduct.

“The Mobile Court is part of the activities that we undertaking as to achieve our goals for 2018.

“There is no special time for obeying traffic laws, safety is an all time business and we will be having it from time to time.

“During special operations like this we look out for every offense but we have special interest in high risk factors like lane violation, speeding, possession of license, use of phone among others,” he said.
