Everyone Was Wrong About 2020 And What It Portends By Preye Campbell

A global pandemic. Massive deaths caused by the pandemic. A world halted in its strides for months. Racism. Protests, a world united against racism. And then rising rape in Nigeria.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have seen it all in 2020.

‘Happy New Year’ we said at the tail of last year.

But halfway, the year has been far from happy.

It seems, in retrospect, everyone was wrong about expectations for 2020.

Do you remember when Nigeria used to have a Vision 2020?

Of course, that was just a ludicrous political mantra, meant to swindle us into casting votes for someone -or some group of people – to possess and caress power.

But we developed certain interests and hope for 2020.

Whether as a personal or collective goal, most of us believed that 2020 will usher in a new era.

Maybe one laced with a technologically advanced life.

Maybe a better nation for us in this part of West Africa.

Look at us now, facing tribulations like in the Book of Revelations.

Emphatically, the world is in chaos, with the fight against racism in the U.S, the battle against rape in Nigeria.

We certainly did not ask for this severe economic depression and unrest in the United States.

Everyday, the social media is awash with sad, demeaning stories.

And you get to marvel at the high monster level in man.

The devil seems to be in town after all.

I can go on and on with the adjectives but everything points to the same direction- these are tough times.

We are in the phase of seeing out the first half of the year. Maybe we can still salvage 2020.

Whatever the situation is, we can just agree that so far, 2020 has been an interesting year.
