Motorists will be banned from holding mobile phones at the wheel under plans to close a legal loophole that is said to allow reckless driving.
The government is announcing today that it wants drivers to be given a £200 fine and six penalty points for handling a phone in all circumstances as part of a review of the law. Under existing legislation they can be prosecuted only if they make calls or send text messages and emails.
Other activity, such as filming, taking photos, browsing the internet or scrolling through a playlist is not defined as “interactive communication” and therefore is not punishable.
