Sir, kindly permit me to comment on the reported desire of former president Goodluck Jonathan to vie for presidency in 2023. Much as his desire and ambition are in order, I wish to draw his attention to a tale of the elephant and tortoise.
Once upon a time, the tortoise connived with some hunters, butchers and barbeque merchants to bring the elephant to town, so that the could do to the big catch whatever they wanted.
The tortoise told the flesh-hungry crowd to dig a very big hole over which they should lay red carpet. On this carpet, they should place a royal stool falsely decorated, while the killer squad would hang around behind a thick curtain.
The cunning tortoise then cajoled and goaded the elephant that the people in the community wanted the mammoth mammal to become their king. The elephant was carried away by the inordinate ambition and began to engage in macabre dance, as praise singers and drummers went wild about town in a din of merry making.
As the elephant danced in foxtrot towards the false throne at the end of the red carpet, the weight of the animal made the platform cave in. And the elephant fell headlong and became helpless while the waiting mob pounced on its flesh.
And before one could say Jack Robinson, the hunters, the butchers and barbeque sellers had finished off the elephant and shared its parts in smithereens. That was how the diminutive tortoise brought an end to elephantine glory.
Finally, I’m afraid, this animated politicians’ circus show is a season’s film. Happy viewing.
God bless Nigeria!
