Dambazau reverses special promotion for 30 NIS officers …… PUNCH

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), has ordered the reversal of special promotion to 30 Nigerian Immigration Service personnel. The promotion was carried out by the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board early this year.

It was learnt that the minister directed the board to cancel the promotion while the beneficiaries revert to their former ranks.

Our correspondent had exclusively reported last Tuesday that the special promotion did not follow due process.

Special promotion in the NIS, according to findings, is based on extra-ordinary feats, acts of gallantry, courage, bravery, exceptional honesty and conduct that were worthy of emulation — parameters which sources said the board did not consider during the exercise.

A source stated that Dambazau, who is the CDFIPB chairman, ordered the cancellation of the promotion last week “having being convinced that it did not follow due process.”

Meanwhile, the promotion interview for Immigration Service personnel, which was suspended last week, has been rescheduled for December 3, 2015, with screening of candidates slated for Wednesday (today).

A notice from the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Martin Abeshi, signed by one H.A. Yerima, Principal Staff Officer to the CGI, directed State Comptrollers of Immigration on Monday to inform the candidates about the new date.

It read, “This is to kindly inform you that CGI is in receipt of an urgent notice from the Secretary-Director of the CDFIPB to the effect that the postponed promotion interview exercise would now hold as follow: (i) Wednesday, December 2, 2015 — Screening of candidates (ii) Thursday, December 3, 2015 — Examination. You are required to notify all Comptrollers and officers and men under you accordingly.”

NIS officers, who spoke to our correspondent, however complained about the long time it took for the board to release the list of successful candidates.

They described the promotion interview as a ruse to exhaust the board’s 2015 allocation before the Federal Government calls for closure of account for the year.

An officer said, “Nigerians need to see the sham we call interview. The first goal is to exhaust the allocation before the Presidency calls for closure of accounts for the year and the second goal is to favour friends who are willing to pay back in cash or kind.

“It takes months for the result to be released, thereby subjecting officers to lots of anxiety and mental torture. It also gives room for desperate officers to make overtures to willing members of the board.”

The NIS Public Relations Officer, Ekpedeme King, confirmed that the interview would hold on Wednesday and Thursday.
