As a precautionary measure to combat the coronavirus outbreak, Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in the US have suspended passport interviews and biometric capture.
According to different statements released by the missions in Washington, New York and Atlanta, the suspension will take effect from Monday, March 16.
The mission said the suspension is necessary to “protect the health of staff and applicants”.
NAN reports that the consulates said emergency travel certificates would be made available to those seeking urgent travel, however, these would be processed by mail.
“Applicants for ETC should forward their applications by mail, attaching the relevant documents and self-addressed mailing envelope,” the consulate in Washington said.
The consulate in Atlanta also said the travel certificates would be mailed back to applicants.
On Friday, Donald Trump, president of the United States, declared a national emergency over COVID-19 which has spread to 144 countries across the world.
In the US, it has been reported that 2,800 people have been infected and 60 people have been killed as at Sunday morning.
At present, Nigeria has one confirmed case of the disease.
