Electricity consumers in Festac area in Amuwo Odofin, Local Government, Awoyaya area in Ibeju Lekki and other areas in Lagos State, have bemoaned the poor power supply to their communities in the last one month.
They complained that the irregular electricity supply has compounded their socio-economic situations, besides the issue of estimated billing system they are forced to pay.
A resident of Old container area of Awoyaya in Ibeju Lekki, who simply identified himself as Mr. Ken, described the electricity supply in the area as disappointing, lamenting that: “Electricity supply here is frustrating. For the past weeks, we have been forced to live in darkness without any explanation.
It has really affected the socio-economic activities here because there is no business that can strive in darkness. Most artisans in the area have now resorted to commercial motorcycles and other petty jobs because the erratic power supply has crippled their businesses.”
Similarly, a resident on 22 road in Festac town, called on the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, to urgently address its power crisis which has brought about total blackout for a month.
A frozen food trader on 322 road, Mrs. Okeke, said her business was running on deficit as she spent N10, 000 weekly to buy petrol for her generator, noting that the poor electricity supply was compounded by the arbitrary billing of consumers in the area. Currently, 21, 22, 23, 322, and other areas in Festac town, have been shut out from power supply.
On the power situation, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, Godwin Idemudia, attributed the blackout to the heavy down pour.
According to him, the flood that resulted from the torrential rains over the weekend had caused damage to some of the company’s equipment in Lekki, Ikoyi, Ijora, Victoria Island and some other parts of Lagos metropolis under the coverage of the company.
He said in a statement that the flood had caused water seepage into some sensitive and vital equipment and this had resulted in the shutdown of some distribution substations as well as some 11/33KV injection substations.
